The earliest references to hypnosis stretch back to the early Egyptians. Not until the 1800’s and the work of Anton Mesmer does modern history document this fascinating phenomenon. Before the advent of chloroform, hypnotic anaesthesia was widely used for complex surgical procedures including amputations. Hundreds, if not thousands of such procedures were conducted across the British Empire, pioneered in India by the work of Scottish physician James Esdaile.
Today, hypnosis and self hypnosis is utilised more commonly for its notable analgesic effects on diagnosed pain, including pain resulting from cancer and the unpleasant side-effects of chemotherapy. Hypnotic pain management can also be useful as an adjunct or alternative to traditional chemical or opiate-based medications.
